Our Scholars

Since 1947, we have awarded over 1,000 scholarships to those working in the food, farming, horticulture and rural industries. Our Scholars travel across the globe to learn from leading experts and farmers before bringing their knowledge back to the UK to share at home. With study topics ranging from hill farming to global trading markets (and everything in between), Nuffield Farming Scholars all share passion for what they do, a desire to do things better and a head full of questions…

    Necessity is the mother of invention……As a first generation, new entrant farmer without a farm in my early 40s I’ve looked to technology and innovation to start in Agriculture.

    I am an 11th generation landowner from Essex, with a 20 years of varied experience that includes working for and with water companies, tech firms, charities, investment firms and on our farming estate.

    I grew up in Ghana where my family kept some sheep and chicken, my love for agriculture became apparent in secondary school where I studied horticulture and livestock agriculture.

    I am the fourth-generation on our tenanted farm in North Herefordshire, located on the banks of the River Arrow. The farm has been certified organic by the Soil Association for over 20 years.

  • Meet Charlotte Cole

    Based in North Yorkshire with my Husband and two labradors, I work as a poultry vet caring for hundreds of millions of birds a year, notably layers, layer pullets and broilers across the North East of England.

    I’m a mixed and diversified Organic farmer from South Cornwall. Environmental land management is a key part of my business. This includes; lowland heathland, species rich grassland, agroforestry and Native breed cattle and sheep to name a few.

    I’m a fourth generation arable and pig farmer from the North East of Scotland. While my career plan has never deviated from becoming a farmer, I initially chose to study Physics at University and worked as a Data Engineer for four years in Edinburgh.

    Originally from a none-farming background, I have found myself immersed in agriculture, with a focussed interest on small ruminant production systems.

    Growing up in rural Worcestershire, and now living in the Cotswolds, a love of all things nature, led to my pursuit of a BSc in Biology at the University of Bath.

    I grew up on a farm in West Sussex and loved it, but my first career was in Shipping. After 8 years in that industry in various countries, I found myself drawn back into food production.

    I grew up in a rural community in Gloucestershire, and after a stint of city life in Salford, and town life in Newbury, I finally moved back to the countryside in 2008 after marrying my fourth generation farming husband Tim.

    I grew up in mid-Wales as the 5th generation on our mixed sheep, beef, poultry, and arable farm, encompassing both upland and lowland terrain. Having studied Law at UCL and an MPhil at the University of Cambridge, I qualified as a barrister.

  • Meet Tom McVeigh

    Born and raised in Suffolk, I am the thirteenth generation farmer in my family. I left the farm seeing very little to improve on or to be excited by. In the past few years it feels like our industry has become latent again and full of new opportunities.
