I am a mental health nurse working in rural Cumbria, married to a first-generation dairy farmer, which gives me a unique perspective on the challenges faced by those in agriculture. Living and working in this community, I see how isolation, financial uncertainty, and the demanding nature of farming can affect mental well-being. I am committed to supporting those in rural areas who often lack easy access to resources and face stigma around seeking help. The Nuffield Scholarship provides an invaluable opportunity to learn from communities worldwide facing similar challenges and to bring back innovative approaches that could make a real difference. I am deeply grateful to my sponsors, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, for helping make this journey possible.

Addressing Suicide in Agriculture: Supporting and Preventing the Biggest Hidden Danger Today.

Study Overview

The agricultural community faces significant challenges that can lead to mental health issues and a high rate of suicide. Factors such as financial stress, isolation, and the demands of farming often contribute to this crisis, yet many farmers feel unable to seek help due to stigma. This study aims to explore effective ways to prevent suicide and promote mental health in agriculture. I will look at successful programs from around the world that have tackled similar issues, focusing on peer support, community engagement, and reducing stigma around mental health.

By visiting farming communities and studying these programs, I hope to gather valuable insights that can be adapted for use in the UK. My goal is to recommend practical solutions that create a supportive environment for farmers and their families, helping to reduce suicide risk and improve overall mental well-being in the agricultural sector.
