Peter Roe

Having been born and raised in South Oxfordshire I wouldn’t have imagined that I’d have moved to the Southern Uplands of Galloway to become a forest manager for the start of my career. It was through good fortune that I was introduced to the world of forestry around the end of my A levels, and it was that introduction which afforded me the time to direct my efforts and gain a degree in Forestry from Bangor University.

Since moving to Scotland, I have become enthralled in the world of sustainable commercial forestry and increasingly interested in how we diversify the sector to futureproof ourselves. I really appreciate my role in the industry as it affords me the freedom to have direct influence over our landscapes and make lasting positive impacts for future generations to enjoy.

Aspen : A Hybridised Approach to Economic Forestry in the UK

Study Overview

My study is titled “Aspen: A Hybridised Approach to Economic Forestry in the UK” and I believe this encapsulates the context of the study very neatly.

It is my goal to offer diversity in the ways in which economically successful forestry in the UK can be undertaken through the exploration of hybridised Aspen trees.

I hope that with the fullness of this study, silvicultural approaches can be identified which are not only able to provide the economic and timber benefits that allow the forestry sector to sustain itself; but also the environmental benefits that the industry needs to be able to deliver on.

There is a long-term drive to diversify our forests, and this has historically come at the cost of productivity. It is the goal of this study to look at one way of achieving increased diversity without the sacrifices that previously foresters are accustomed to seeing.
