Awal Fuseini
I grew up in Ghana where my family kept some sheep and chicken, my love for agriculture became apparent in secondary school where I studied horticulture and livestock agriculture. I then proceeded to study BSc (Agriculture) in Cape Coast University, MSc (Meat Science and Technology) in Bristol University, and PhD (Animal Welfare) also in Bristol University in the UK.
My working life has mainly involved working in the food and agriculture industries. I previously worked as the certification manager for the UK’s Halal Food Authority (HFA) before becoming a Senior Halal Manager for the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) in my current role. My role involves engagement with farmers, processors, and others in the supply chain to develop the local and export markets for Halal.

Study Overview
My Nuffield Scholarship is kindly co-funded by the Central Region Farmers Trust and Three Counties Agriculture Society. I will embark on visits to some major global meat producing and exporting countries to learn about their Halal slaughter techniques and regulations and how these differ from the systems used in the UK. It is hoped that the results of this study will be implemented in the UK, with a view to improving Halal meat production for the domestic and export markets to support farmers and meat processors to maximise the benefits of the Halal sector.
