Regenerative Agriculture in various regions of the world

This report presents the findings of my observations and analysis of regenerative agriculture in different parts of the world, gathered during travel undertaken as part of the Nuffield International Farming Scholarship programme.
Among the places I visited were Brazil, Texas, Romania, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Wales, Scotland and Australia. The analysis covers both large-area farms and smaller European systems, allowing a range of different approaches to food production to be compared in the context of local conditions.
The report shows that regenerative agriculture is not a single technology but a complete system built on interconnected elements: soil management, cover crops, the integration of cropping and livestock production, minimising cultivation operations, and efficient use of resources. Adopting regenerative practices delivers measurable benefits — improved soil quality, greater resilience to variable weather, reduced costs, and long-term stability for the farm business.
The international comparison also shows that farm scale and local climatic conditions determine which practices are chosen. Large farms use No-Till systems and minimise field operations, while in Europe regenerative practices often run alongside conventional cultivation systems, allowing farmers to experiment and to add value to their products.
The report further points to the significant role of the market and of consumers. Whether regenerative practices are adopted depends on buyer expectations, pressure from the food industry, and the scope to build competitive advantage through sustainable and environmentally sound products. Farmer education, advisory services, and access to practical knowledge and technology are essential to implementing regenerative agriculture successfully.
The conclusions drawn in this report underline the need for local adaptation of practices, for introducing change gradually, for integrating cropping and livestock production, and for monitoring results over a longer time horizon. Regenerative agriculture has the potential to become the foundation of sustainable, resilient and productive food production worldwide, while maintaining a balance between farm performance and environmental protection.
