Building resilience through ecological literacy, connection and community

Resilience is the capacity to adapt, evolve and re-balance in the face of change and challenges. As climate extremes intensify and farmers and agricultural systems confront increasing pressures from drought, market volatility, soil degradation and societal expectations, resilience has become a critical theme for the future of farming in Australia.
Through global travel and personal experiences, lessons emerged from people, livestock and landscapes that brought to light key traits for building resilient individuals, communities and ecosystems. For me, these include accepting change, being adaptable, embracing complexity, supporting diversity and facilitating community, connection and intergenerational knowledge transfer. I believe at the heart of these traits lies a common thread: relationships between biological communities including soil, microbes, plants, animals and people.
Just as microbes communicate with plants and animals pass down nutritional knowledge, our farming communities thrive on networks of shared experience and support. The same traits that sustain natural ecosystem balance can help us build farming cultures capable of weathering change, together.
While drought resilience is a focus, I have approached it with a much broader lens, encompassing personal, ecological and communal sustainability across generations.
A disconnect to our land and community is a greater risk to rangelands than drought (Graham Finlayson, Regenerating Rangelands Conference, 2024).
Case studies from Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Georgia, France, Canada and Zimbabwe highlight how farmers are drawing on science, lived experiences and lessons from nature to shape their farming systems. From shepherding in the French Alps to reconnecting producers and consumers in Canada, these examples demonstrate that there is no single method, only a shared mindset of continual learning through observation, connection, and creativity.
Importantly, this report does not prescribe specific management practices. Instead, it shares the lessons that have challenged the way I think and farm, inviting a shift towards farming with nature and embracing complexity and deep connection in our systems. It encourages readers to observe their landscape, build ecological literacy, and consider our role as stewards of natural ecosystems and food producers for our wider communities.
