Worshipful Company of Butchers

The Worshipful Company of Butchers is a long-established and highly active Livery Company within the City of London; a significant proportion of its members have links with the meat and livestock industry. Many of its activities take place in its Hall in central London, which has recently been refurbished and is a convenient venue for anyone wishing to hold a meeting (small or large) in central London.

The Butchers Company has had a close relationship with the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust over the past ten years, during which time it has sponsored seven Scholars. The funding for these scholarships comes from our Education Charity – and we are able to supplement this financial support with advice from members of the company, some of whom have relevant experience and contacts with livestock and meat representatives from all over the world.

The Company greatly values the Nuffield Farming Scholarships for four main reasons:

  • It attracts high calibre scholars who are motivated to make the best of their opportunities
  • It is an excellent means of encouraging the personal development of those who have reached a pivotal stage in their careers
  • It is equipping potential future industry leaders who have the flare and skills to take up key positions in farming and the food industry
  • When the scholars have completed their projects, they have frequently gained valuable knowledge to pass on to the farming, agribusiness and food industries

Two recent examples of this have been Caroline Mitchell (2018 Nuffield Scholar), who is currently running a consultancy focussing on providing expertise in the area of meat-eating quality. Sarah Pick (2019 Nuffield Scholar) is a knowledge exchange manager with AHDB, who is helping to pass on key knowledge she has learned about increasing the profitability in the beef suckler herd.

    Sarah Pick

I grew up on a beef farm in North Yorkshire and from a young age I developed a strong interest in the agricultural industry. After graduating with a BSc in Animal Science I joined a retail graduate scheme which gave me a great insight into the sector and the importance of farmers producing a consistent product.

    Caroline Mitchell

Having grown up on Beef, Dairy and Arable farm in West Yorkshire, I was always aware of the agricultural industry. However, it wasn’t until I actually had an Applied Biology honours degree from University of Nottingham under my belt and no idea what I wanted to do with it, that I started looking at agriculture more closely.
