Scholars Programme

The NUFFIELD FARMING SCHOLARSHIP TRUST administers the Scholarship programme and provides reasonable travel and subsistence costs to fund the study. It also provides practical assistance with travel and study plans. Below is an outline of the key activities that the Scholarship programme entails.

International Pre-Study Conference (Contemporary Scholars Conference)

Scholars attend an international pre-study conference and briefing in late-February/early-March, held in association with Nuffield bodies in other countries. Participants learn from key organisations and agri-businesses about the economics and politics of global agriculture, develop their leadership skills and gather information relevant to their individual studies. Other opportunities for fact finding visits to key farming countries, including Europe, Asia and the Antipodes, are also offered as part of the programme.

The Study

Scholarships must be completed within 18 months of award, during which time the Scholar will travel and study for at least eight weeks in total.

The Report

On completion of the study tour, Scholars are expected to compile a report précis for the Nuffield annual report, followed by a full report within three months of study completion which will be published.

Winter Conference

Scholars present their findings at an Annual Conference held in November. They are also encouraged to communicate their new knowledge and experience widely to others in the industry in which they work.

After the Study ...

Having successfully completed a Scholarship, the learning process continues for life. Scholars enjoy a programme of regular sector and regional study meetings, visits and farm walks held in the UK and abroad. This is in addition to one-off specialist industry conferences staged by the Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust and an invaluable network of industry contacts.

If you think you could do this ...

The closing date to apply for 2014 Nuffield awards is 31st July 2013. The Selection Committee will meet to short list candidates in September, leading to interviews in the week commencing 14th October 2013. Successful candidates receiving awards will then be invited to the 2013 Annual Conference to be officially presented with their awards during the Conference before commencing travel and study.
