William Armitage  -  Sustainable milk production

I am married to Michaela and two children Jessica 18 and Giles 15.

We have enjoyed living and farming in East Leicestershire for the 23 years, where I am now the managing partner of a 380 cow Organic Dairy herd on 312ha, I jointly own another 110ha Organic dry stock farm where we rear our youngstock, I also run a contract farming business with 300 conventional dairy cows on a low input grazing sytem, producing yogurt on farm and selling the surplus milk to make Stilton.

The main farming business has moved from the highest yielding, Gold cup winning herd, to the present Organic moderate yielding herd looking to optimise the unit in a profitable sustainable way.

Sustainable Milk Production

I question whether organic or conventional UK dairy farms producing winter milk are sustainable in the future with the increase in feed and fuel costs.

I aim to study and investigate ways to increase Profit by increasing dry matter yields/ha through excellent soil and crop husbandry, to look for other protein sources to feed our cows and to see what GM technology can offer the livestock farmer in the future.

I will first travel to Denmark and Sweden then to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the USA.
