Gwyn Jones Chairs NFU Dairy Board
NFU DAIRY BOARD ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN
Sussex dairy farmer Gwyn Jones was this week (25 Feb) elected as chairman of the NFU's new dairy board. Mansel Raymond from Pembrokeshire was elected vice chairman.
Mr Jones milks 650 dairy cows on the heavy clay soil of the Sussex Weald; a farm that he runs in partnership with his family.
The creation of the new board follows last year's review of the NFU structure.
Meeting for the first time; the board - comprising nine delegates from the NFU's regional milk boards - will be the leading representative voice for farmers in the dairy sector.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Jones said : "The dairy sector is at a turning point. The reform of the CAP will bring changes for everyone in the dairy sector.
It is vital that we use this opportunity to return dairy farming to profitability, and I relish the challenge of meeting this goal.
The rational response is for producers and processors to form closer collaborative partnerships to capture a greater share of the end value of dairy products.
At the same time we have to focus our efforts on profitability across the dairy business. This includes minimising costly burdens on the industry that hinder this objective, now and in the future."
