New technologies to transform UK agriculture
|
Introducing the conference, held on 20th April, at the East of England Showground, NFST Chairman, Jack Ward said: "The ambition for today is to offer a glimpse into the future; to investigate; to understand and to report back to you on what technological developments are taking place across the world; and explore how these developments might shape and influence the future of agriculture and horticulture here in the UK. "Innovation is crucial for the success of any business. Agriculture is no exception and in an era of rapid change moving forward is essential if the industry is to thrive and prosper. "The concept of 'business as usual' may just not be enough to meet the challenges of feeding a growing global population and so making best use of the latest science and technology is going to be an important contributor to future success. "This, the Arden conference, is about taking up the challenge of looking at the latest science and technologies from around the globe and assessing their suitability and fit for UK agriculture." During the day, a series of speakers looked at a range of new technologies, plant and animal genetics, functional foods, non food uses and cutting edge engineering and asked the all important question - 'How can UK agriculture apply these to gain competitive advantage and meet the challenge of raising food production; safeguarding the environment and equally importantly remaining profitable and financially sustainable'.
