Nuffield Farming Scholarships invite enthusiastic individuals to explore topics of their choice in agriculture, land management, horticulture or the food chain. They provide individuals with the unique opportunity:
-
to achieve personal development through study and travel
-
to stand back from their day-to-day occupation and study a topic of real interest to them
-
to access the world's best in food and farming
-
to deliver benefits to UK farmers and growers, and to the industry as a whole
Funded by the agriculture and food industry, charities with agricultural objectives and past Scholars themselves, the NFST awards around 20 new Scholarships each year to enthusiastic people who are 45 years old and under, and who fulfil the criteria laid down by the Trust.
Are you ready for a challenge?
If you are involved in farming, rural industry or the food chain and feel it's time to step back and take a look at the bigger picture on a worldwide scale, then a Nuffield Farming Scholarship Award could be just the challenge you need.
The Scholarship
The award of a Scholarship enables individuals to study a topic of great personal interest to themselves, carrying out an extensive study tour anywhere in the world, visiting one country, or a series of countries.
The Scholarship must be completed within 18 months of its award, during which time the Scholar should be engaged in travel and study for a minimum of two months in total. The Trust will provide the Scholar with reasonable travel and subsistence costs to fund their Scholarship.
Spreading the word
The Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust is dedicated to developing leadership in farming and rural industries and committed to the development of farming, horticulture, the food chain and every aspect of rural land use. Key to this is technology transfer, which takes place across the industry in its widest form as a result of Scholars' studies into their chosen topics all over the world.
On return from their study tour, Scholars are expected to produce a written report that will be published and made freely available. They are also required to present their findings at the annual Winter Conference, and communicate their new knowledge and experience widely to others in the industry in which they work.
Summaries of previous Scholars' reports are available on this website, with full copies available from the Trust, or the on-line bookshop.
Continued learning
Having successfully completed a Nuffield Farming Scholarship, the learning process continues for life. Returning Scholars can enjoy a programme of regular sector and regional group study meetings, farm walks, an annual conference and an international conference every three years.
